HIRING RANGE: $20-$25/hour

Intern will learn real life engineering practices and applications on City Capital Projects. Intern will work with City Engineers to navigate through the project execution process from start to finish on actual projects including:
- Project Scoping
- Required Survey Needs
- Conceptual and Final Design
- Project constraints including utility relocations, stakeholder engagement, unforeseen problems during construction, and funding shortage.
- Construction practices and techniques.
Fundamentals of engineering and construction practices will be taught to help Interns learn real life applications of disciplines learned in school, and what is actually constructable in real life applications.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (This job description does not intend to list every function of the position.)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Engineering intern will assist Lakewood Engineers and Designers on a variety of tasks for Capital Projects and Utilities including:

  • Assist in preparing engineering related calculations, design drawings, specifications, cost estimating, and visual aids.
  • Assist with field work (e.g., vehicle and pedestrian traffic counts, construction observation, inventory and documentation of City assets).
  • Collect and enter data and apply technical principles and theories to assist in interpreting and analyzing data.
  • Review contractor submittals for adherence to technical specifications on construction projects.
  • Updating GIS databases with newly constructed assets and mapping existing features such as structures, drainageways, and ditch.
  • Miscellaneous assignments on an as-needed basis.
  • Must be able to interact with others in a positive manner.
  • Requires regular and prompt attendance.

Must maintain and utilize City-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when conducting activities where the employee is exposed to risks above those encountered in a traditional office setting. If injured on-the-job due to failure to utilize PPE a safety violation can be taken.

Supervision Received

Receives general supervision from the Public Works Civil Engineer III or Principal Civil Engineer I.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

Education

High School diploma or equivalent

Currently in pursuit of Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or related field

Experience

Completed or currently enrolled taking courses in Civil or Environmental Engineering, including hydraulics, structures, geotechnical, surveying or other related coursework.

Licensure/Certification/Registration

Possession of valid motor vehicle operator's license and good driving record.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to use proper safety procedures at work sites.

Ability to communicate effectively and establish constructive working relationships with City personnel, contractors, members of the public and a diversity of special interest groups.

Ability to learn and operate all equipment listed.

Experience performing math and trigonometric functions necessary to determine quantities and estimates.

Ability to use a personal computer and keyboard; ability to use spreadsheet software.

Post offer physical exam is required.

GIS and/or CAD skills preferred

Expected to perform duties both in office and out in the field

Pay Range

$15.16-$57.58

Background and reference checks will be conducted for all regular and some variable/seasonal positions.
