About the Job: Supervise and coordinate the activities and operations of the Evidence and Property Unit in support of other departments, outside agencies, and the public. You will also provide highly responsible and complex technical support to higher level supervisory and/or management staff.

As a Police Evidence Supervisor, you will:
- Coordinate the organization, staffing, and operational activities for the Unit, including evidence and impound facilities and personnel.
- Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, laws, policies, procedures, and priorities; recommend and implement resulting policies and procedures; Identify opportunities for improving service delivery methods, procedures, and resource needs.
- Make recommendations for budget allocations and implement improvements.
- Coordinate and review the work plans for assigned services and activities of the Unit.
- Assign work activities and projects; monitor workflow; review and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures. Meet with personnel to identify and resolve problems.
- Responsible for daily facility operations and functions to include ensuring critical duties are completed, providing supplies and resources to personnel, assisting with customer service needs, and providing support as a working supervisor as needed.
- Select, train, motivate, and evaluate assigned Unit personnel.
- Provide and/or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; and implement discipline and termination procedures.
- Assist in the preparation of evidence and property for auction (including vehicles), donation, destruction, or return to owner; file related documentation.
- Provide information regarding investigations and prosecutions as needed; testify in court as required; Ensure that all operations and activities follow accepted chain of custody protocols, policies, procedures, and legal requirements.
- Maintain and update a variety of files and records; retrieve objects and records for City personnel and outside agencies as requested. Produce reports and statistics as requested.
- Conduct extensive case research and follow established laws and directives on property and evidence retention and disposition.
- Provide highly responsible and complex technical support to higher level leadership; respond as necessary after hours; prepare and present reports and correspondence as appropriate; participate in special projects involving impound/evidence resources.
- Assist with contract vendors and provide training and oversight of contract and volunteer personnel.
- Collaborate with and support internal and external customers, and outside agency entities.
- Identify resource needs and opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures.
- Stay current with legislative updates, evidence and impound related advancements, and best management practices.
- Make recommendations based on regular assessment of unit duties, needs, staffing, space, and resources to best fulfill the mission of the unit and department.
- Conduct and participate in required audits, inspections and inventories.
- Follow local, state, and federal laws as well as all City and CSPD directives and best-management practices in all of the above.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of modern office procedures and equipment, including computers
Knowledge of methods and techniques of filing and record keeping
Knowledge of established safety procedures related to safe lifting, handling biological/blood contaminants, sharp objects, and firearms
Knowledge of basic police operations and protocol
Knowledge of principles and practices of property and evidence custody
Ability to produce reports, business letters, training curriculum and manuals
Ability to provide excellent customer service in often tense situations
Ability to interpret and understand changing laws, policies, procedures, laws, and guidelines
Ability to conduct extensive research utilizing multiple databases and software systems
Ability to remain up to date on evidence laws, practices and policies
Ability to maintain and update a variety of files and records
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a related field, preferably business administration, public administration, or criminal justice.
Three years of full-time responsible technical experience in a related field, preferably in a law enforcement setting, including one year of administrative and/or lead supervisory experience
Possess or obtain within three (3) months of hire, NCIC/CCIC certifications
Education and Experience Equivalency: One year of relevant work experience may be substituted for one year of required education (OR) one year of academic coursework specifically related to this position beyond the minimum requirement may be substituted for one year of required professional experience.
- Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in an evidence unit or other criminal justice field, or related experience.
