Utility Locator I - Asset Management

About the Job: As a Utility Locator I, you will support the City of Colorado Springs’ Utility Locate Program by identifying, locating, and marking all City-owned underground facilities to ensure safe excavation. These facilities include critical assets such as irrigation, stormwater, fiber, traffic signal power, lighting, and communication lines that, if damaged, can disrupt services and increase costs. The team protects over 141,000 underground assets across more than 6,165 lane miles of roadway, public and private property, rights-of-way, and parks. More information on our Utility Locates Team

Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday, 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM. On-call every 5th week (Wednesday to Wednesday) with shift differential pay during on-call duty

As an Utility Locator I, you will:
  • Read and interpret maps and construction drawings to accurately mark utility lines and submit map updates as necessary; Maintain and update records
  • Create charts and drawings to display various utility lines using Geographic Information System (GIS) or other specialized computer software
  • Complete marks and locate requests to facilitate safe excavation during construction activities
  • Respond to customer complaints
  • Interact with contractors, coworkers, the general public, and other outside agencies to establish and maintain effective working relationships and to coordinate the location of utility lines
  • Communicate verbally and in writing with customers and contractors
  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations; compliance reviews will be conducted onsite for locate techniques
  • Attend guided training online or with team members to advance skill level with locate techniques and best practices
  • Complete locate requests to facilitate safe excavation
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of full-time, professional experience in utility locating, maintenance or a related field
  • Possess, or obtain upon hire, and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver’s license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
