Description


Boulder County Coroner's Office is offering opportunities for multiple Forensic Science Academy Participants to engage within a safe, controlled environment to learn about the roles, responsibilities, and challenges of working in death investigations, or a morgue setting.

This is not a paid or benefited position. Participants will attend one 6-hour session, 9:00am - 3:00pm on Tuesday, July 28th, 2026 located at the the Boulder County Coroner's Office, 5610 Flatiron Parkway, Boulder, CO.

Hiring Salary Range: Unpaid

Examples of Duties

Forensic Science Academy participants will be immersed in staged learning sessions to gain insight into the operations of a coroner's office. Attendee activities include an overview of Colorado statutes that shape coroner's office, a staged death scene using a mannequin, a virtual autopsy, and more! This Forensic Science Academy is an opportunity for students currently studying forensic science, health science, or criminal justice.

Participants should bring a water bottle. Time is scheduled for a working lunch. Participants are welcome to bring lunch, and will have access to a refrigerator and microwave. A light lunch of a sandwich and fruit is available for participants that do not bring lunch.

To preserve the integrity of our service to community members, attendees will not observe or make contact with persons in our care, nor access case investigation records.

Required Qualifications

Forensic Science Academy minimum qualifications are:

- Current college student of a nationally accredited college or university, with a concentration in an applicable field of study such as health or human science, forensic science, or criminal justice

OR

- High school students at least 16 years of age with a career interest in the field

  • For high school students age 16 or 17, a signed parent/guardian consent to participate is required
  • Additionally, one letter of support from a current high school educator, or from a professional in a related field is required

Applicants that are not current students, will not be considered.

Supplemental Information

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicants must attach a cover letter that explains interest in attending the Boulder County Coroner's Forensic Science Academy
  • A clearance will be completed of all selected attendees to ensure CJIS compliance for building access
  • For applicants ages 16 and 17, a signed consent from parent or guardian is required - the consent form will be provided as needed
  • All attendees must sign a confidentiality agreement, photo consent, and agree to a background check
  • Participants must present a state or federal photo identification per security guidelines

Please note once an application is submitted, documents cannot be added. Include your letter of support when the application is submitted. Due to the number of applicants, documents submitted separately from the application cannot be accepted.
