CDOT offers $30.11 an hourfor this temporary position. The majority of CDOT’s temporary positions work 40 hours per week with the opportunity for overtime.

About the Position:
This temporary Electronic Specialist II is located at our Alamosa location. This position will correctly, safely, and efficently locate, map (pointman), mark and flag underground CDOT utilities, including fiberoptics communications and electric power systems. This position will thoroughly search for underground utilities in a designated area, accurately marking the location, completing the necessary documentation, and photgraphing each locate.With oversight, your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Access and troubleshoot communication, power and device specific issues including understanding the testing of different pieces of equipment by power cycling or repairing damages;
- Test and splice fiber where necessary under direction of supervisor and/or work lead;
- Perform all duties associated with maintenance of components of the ITS asset ranging from wiping dirty camera lenses to testing fiber laterals to find damages;
- Repair devices for power or communications infrastructure, escalating more difficult repairs;
- Trace and review power infrastructrure such as pedestals, meters and transformers in order to trace lines going to the asset to troubleshoot and identify any issues with power escalating to ITS electricians as needed;
- Troubleshoot and repair electronic, electro-mechanical, and communciation devices to resolve operational equipment issues using appropriate test equipment, hand, and power tools;
- Other job duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
- Primarily 6:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Thursday
- Approximately 90% spent in the field, 10% spent in the office
- Travel required during work hours throughout the Alamosa area
Required to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold) and variable weather conditions
- Required to operate CDOT vehicles

Experience Only:
- Two (2) years of experience in the following:
- Locating underground utilities including communication and electric wiring safely and accurately
- Maintaining, repairing, installing, modifying, calibrating, certifying, or fabricating electronics or fiber optics communications equipment and devices
OR
Education and Experience:
A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to two (2) years.Education from an accredited college or university with course work in fiber optic systems and infrastructure, electronics, electrical engineering, computer science, information technology or closely related, may be substituted for the required experience.
Experience locating underground utilities including communication and electric wiring safely and accurately.
Technical experience maintaining, repairing, installing, modifying, calibrating, certifying, or fabricating electronics or fiber optics communications equipment and devices.

Essential Services Designation – Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.
- May be required to live within thirty (30) minutes' driving time in normal weather conditions to be able to respond in a timely manner after being notified to report to work. Knowledge of an emergency or hazardous condition may be considered to be notification to report to workstation.

Preferred Qualifications: The exceptional applicant will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:- Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position.

- Experience with power and hand tools, locating equipment, bucket truck and/or pole cat equipment operation.
- Knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and best practices of fiber optics digital and analog electronic theory, telecommunications, and computer wireless networks.
- Knowledge and experience in installing, repairing, replacing, and troubleshooting a wide variety of electronic systems and equipment.
- Knowledge and understanding of point-to-point, point-to-multi-point, microwave, and other wireless communications.
- Knowledge and understanding of fiber optic handling, terminating, Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) test equipment and splicing.
- Knowledge and understanding of fiber optic transceivers and/or wireless transmitters and repeaters.
- Knowledge and understanding of electronics and control programming.
- Knowledge and understanding of ITS devices (e.g., variable message signs, close circuit TV, radar and/or weather stations).
- Knowledge of DTE and DCE devices, as well as Telnet, CMD, Run, and HyperTerminal applications.
- Familiarity with traffic signal control systems (e.g., Q-free and Kinetics).
- Familiarity with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and work zone safety.
- Ability to interpret and apply electronic schematics.
- Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment.
- Ability to take initiative to solve problems in an innovative manner.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills.
- Strong time and project management skills, including prioritization and project switching ability.
